Damien has worked in the medical device industry for over 20 years. During this time, he has worked for a number of multi-nationals and startups. He started his career with Medtronic in 1998, working in Design Assurance and R&D. More recently Damien spent 8 years working for Novate Medical as the R&D Project Manager. The team successfully developed and commercialized the world’s first bio-convertible IVC filter. Novate Medical was acquired by BTG in 2018, with BTG being subsequently acquired by Boston Scientific. Prior to Novate, Damien worked as an engineering manager for VivaSure Medical, on the development of a large bore vascular closure device. Over the years he has gained experience at senior level in all the aspects of bringing a medical device from concept to commercialisation, including design for manufacture, verification, validation, pre-clinical, clinical, regulatory, technology transfer and production. In his most recent position Damien has been working as an R&D consultant to Veryan Medical supporting their team in the development of a venous stent and its associated delivery system. Damien holds a BSc in Materials Science from University Limerick. He recently returned to college, completing an Executive MBA from NUIG in 2019. Damien was attracted to Bioinnovate by the unique access it provides to clinicians and clinical settings. He is excited to be given the opportunity to observe unmet clinical needs in the healthcare system. Through the structured approach of the Biodesign process he is keen to find and pursue opportunities for innovation with his fellow team members. In his spare time Damien enjoys running, cycling, golf and playing with his kids.
