Gerald Healy is an Industrial Designer specialising in Medical Device Design. He draws, creates and makes and has always wanted to impact and improve people’s lives. His interests led him to study product design and innovation at the Institute of Technology Carlow. During his studies there, he was exposed to user centre design and design research to identify real user problems. This was when he discovered medical device design and its positive effect on people’s lives. His thesis project was an oral hygiene product for people in palliative care or those with physical impairments. To continue his journey in the design of medical devices, he completed the MSc in Medical Device Design at the National College of Art and Design, graduating with a first-class honours. He completed work as an industrial design/usability specialist, combining usability research and design development to create impactful and creative solutions for large multinational companies, such as Boston Scientific, Hollister Medical and Stryker. Completing his thesis project with Stryker’s Design Innovation Centre in Cork. He then worked in a design consultancy that specialised in the industrial design of medical products. Here he worked on R&D projects from multinational companies to start-ups. He was completing usability, and human factors research to identify the pain points users have with a device or system. He strongly believes thorough research leads to the best solution for the user and patient. This attitude toward thoroughness was brought to all his work from sketches, prototyping, and tooling. He believes BioInnovate is the next step in his journey. It provides the environment for him to develop the skills, knowledge, framework, and network required to impact people’s lives with an innovative medical solution. He looks forward to bringing his skills and combining them with the talents of the other fellows so that they can positively impact patient lives. He enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking, sea swimming and watching sports in his spare time.
