David studied medicine in National University of Ireland, Galway and graduated in 2009. Following graduation from medical school, he finished his internship in Galway and Letterkenny and subsequently worked in the field of surgery, completing rotations in general, breast, orthopaedic and endocrine surgery. Specialising in orthopaedic surgery where he worked as a registrar in Galway, Limerick and Tallaght for 3 years. To complement his clinical training, he completed a full-time research Masters of Surgery in CURAM, NUI Galway. His final thesis ‘Hyaluronic based hydrogels in the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration’ involved fabricating, optimising and in-vivo implanting and testing of the hyaluronic acid hydrogels in the intervertebral discs of rat tails. He has presented his original research at conferences in Brazil, Austria and numerous national conferences. He has had his work published in both national and international journals. He has enthusiastically been involved in teaching in both an informal and formal role, including being the Orthopaedic and Radiology tutor for medical students in NUI Galway while completing a Diploma in Multidisciplinary Radiology. Having worked in both public and private healthcare systems he has great insight into patient and clinician needs along with the unmet clinical need. Prior to starting the BioInnovate program, he has developed and prototyped numerous innovative devices and believes the BioInnovate programme provides an excellent opportunity to become more proactive in improving and shaping our working environment. In His spare time, David enjoys spending time with his family, rugby and golf.
