John is an NUI Galway alumnus having completed his studies there in Mechanical Engineering in 1999. John was one of the first to graduate with a minor in Biomedical adding subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics to the standard engineering program. In 2002 the program advanced to become the first Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program in Ireland. John also holds a higher diploma from NUI Galway in Software Design and Development (2005) and is a PMI certified project management professional. John’s early career consisted of purely mechanical roles in power electronics (Tyco Electronics, Shannon) and thermal management of electronic devices (Bell Labs Ireland, Blanchardstown). The second half of John’s career has seen him take senior engineering, project management and leadership roles in the areas of respiratory (Aerogen, Galway), cardiovascular (4Tech Cardio, Galway), orthopaedics (Paragon 28, Denver) and digital dentistry (Selfsense Technologies, Galway). John is a named inventor on multiple patents in both fields of mechanical engineering and medical devices. John particularly enjoys engaging with clinicians at concept/feasibility stages of device development to capture essential requirements/user needs. John combines this with a hybrid project management approach (Agile+Waterfall) to accelerate product development with a focus on quality and risk management throughout. John is looking forward to expanding on this skillset during the Bioinnovate programme. John has a keen interest in sports being a Connacht rugby season ticket holder, follower of Formula 1 and still hauling the boots on every Monday night for astroturf soccer. John is also a fan of science fiction writing and has recently dabbled in generative AI for image generation.
