Sherien Akasha is a medical doctor with over ten years of clinical experiences. Following graduation from medical school in Sudan, she finished internship training and subsequently, worked in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She went on and completed an MSc honours in Biomedical Sciences at Middlesex University in London. Her thesis was on the development of novel Applications of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry for the Analysis of Glycosaminoglycans in Placental Tissues. She then transitioned to pursue surgical training in Ireland. While accomplishing membership exams, Sherien rotated between surgical departments and gained extensive experiences in Vascular, Breast, Colorectal, General and Emergency surgery. As part of advancing her surgical career, Sherien has conducted many types of research and presented some at National Conferences and carried on to complete a Masters of Surgery (MCh) at NUIG. Sherien has a particular interest in understanding the complexity of the healthcare system. With this in mind, she completed an MSc in Healthcare Management at the RCSI. She has always looked at providing more innovative healthcare and was involved in many non-clinical projects in GUH. She was part of the Surgical Kaizen team that worked on improving patients flow. She contributed tremendously to the establishment, the sustainability and creating the admission criteria of the Acute Surgical Assessment Unit. Moreover, she had exceptional input in the development and implementation of a new Electronic Emergency Surgical Admissions and Handovers Website in GUH. Sherien is passionate about innovation, medical devices, and the use of emerging technology in healthcare. She is looking forward to applying her experiences and knowledge to develop practical clinical solutions that positively improve patients and clinicians experiences. In her spare time, Sherien enjoys keeping fit, spending time with her three young children, traveling, music, reading, socialising and charity.
